An Odd Place for Dolls to Live

One of my least favorite things to do is visit my Ophthalmologist. I'd rather jog naked in January!

However, there are some things we must do, like it or not, for our own good.

Mr. H. and I bite the bullet and do this thing I dislike so much two or three times a year. We learned by trial and error that it’s easier for us if our appointments are arranged so we can go on the same day. That way, we cut down on the number of trips to Charleston, the gasoline and time consumed.
And so... yesterday was the day. I’d been dreading it more than usual  all week because it was time for me to have a Field Vision Test.

Oh, how I hate the Field Vision Test!

Others tell me they don’t mind it so much, but it’s torture for me! I think I must be overly sensitive to the drops that dilate my eyes because my eyes stay dilated for ten to twelve hours. For all that time, I can’t see without glasses and can’t see with them. It’s a terrible feeling!
But yesterday, after all the waiting and dreading and discomfort, the outcome was good. The doctor said, “It looks like you’re holding your own,” and, “I’ll see you again in five months.” Can ya’ say, “Yay?”
~
And that’s not all. There was one other good thing about this doctor visit.
The scary-eyed dolls were gone!
What? You ask.
Here’s the story:  Until yesterday, when we entered my Ophthalmologist’s office, the first thing we saw, standing there in the reception area, were a dozen or more dolls, most of them about three feet tall. They were dressed in long, elegant dresses reminiscent of the 1800’s and had exquisite hairdos that harkened back to the same era.  Ah, they were lovely indeed!
If you like that sort of thing.
The dolls have been there to greet us each time we’ve gone for more than fifteen years. I have no idea why the doctor displayed them there, and never asked, but thought a doctor’s office an odd place for dolls to live.
I always rushed past them to avoid the cold chills that covered my body when I looked too closely. Yes, as ridiculous as it sounds, I’m afraid of dolls! Especially those with porcelain faces that have big, glassy green or blue eyes that always seem to be staring at you.
As a child, I never wanted a doll for Christmas. But sometimes, my mother made sure there was one under the tree anyway, hoping to change my mind. She once said, “Santa thinks all little girls like dolls.” And I said, “Well, Santa doesn’t know me then, ‘cause I hate them!” Mother didn’t like that much and the dolls kept showing up under the Christmas tree even though they gave me nightmares.
I hope the dolls at the doctor’s office are gone for good and not just out for a good cleaning. I’ll be very disappointed if, at the end of January, when I go back, they’re standing there staring at me again – all nice and clean and ready for another fifteen or twenty years of duty greeting people at the door.
But I won’t think about that today. January will be soon enough. Perhaps I’ll ask around and, if I hear that the dolls are back, I may opt for that naked January jog I mentioned earlier instead of keeping my appointment.
I'd probably get fewer cold chills!

Are You Left-Handed?

If you're a Leftie, then Left-Hander's Day is just for you!
The world is built for right-handers. Examples are everywhere. For example:
  • In school, have you ever seen a left-handed desk? They don't exist.
  • Many left-handed items cost more.
  • Novelty coffee mugs are made with the picture or text for a right-handed pick-up.
  • Scissors are for right-handers. Only a lefty would understand this.
  • The computer mouse you are using as you read this is designed for right-handers.
Did you Know? Right-handed people operate in the left side of the brain. Left-handed people use the right side. Therefore, only left-handed people are in their right mind.
Remember today and every day: "Lefties have rights!"
As lefthanders, we never do anything right....kewl!
Left-Handed Facts and Trivia:
  • Sinistrophobia is the fear of left-handedness or things on the left side.
  • While many people are left-handed, very few are 100% left-handed. For example, many Left-handers golf and bat right-handed. On the other hand, there is a high percentage of righties who are 100% right-handed.
  • Lefties are also called "southpaws". The term was coined in baseball to describe a left-handed pitcher.
  • Tuesdays are Lefties luck day.
  • Only about 10% of the population is left-handed.
  • During the 1600's people, thought left-handers were witches and warlocks.
  • International Left-Hander's Day was first celebrated on August 13, 1976. It was started by Lefthander's International.
  • It is believed that all polar bears are left-handed. Also see Polar Bear Day.
  • There is a rumor that octopuses have but one right hand. Scientists are diligently studying this issue.
Think about it: Everyone is a Left-Hander in Left Hand, West Virginia.
Lefthander's Slogan: "Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it". ...Brilliant Author unknown

Clap Your Hands!

August!

The first day of the eighth month of the year 2014!
Not too soon to start Christmas shopping.
I can write that because you can’t get to me. I wouldn’t say it in person for fear of being attacked by those who aren’t through with summer yet.
Some want it to go on forever, but I say to them, “Move south.”
Me? I love the changing seasons!
It’s about now that we start feeling the changes: Cooler mornings and evenings, warm, sunny afternoons. It’s hard to put into words, but the subtle changes begin. The sun is lower in the sky, the sky a different shade of blue. Soft breezes – even on a hot day. Different.
People have diverse likes and dislikes. And that's good. How boring life would be if we were all the same!
~
I have two different personalities – one that shows up in summer and another that takes over at the first hint of fall. Most people like my fall and winter personality best. I love to watch the leaves slowly change colors, a little at a time, until one day I realize my whole world is a different color! More vibrant. It makes me smile. And smile. And smile.
To say I love fall would be an understatement.
~
I woke up this morning and the sun was shining. Off to a good start, I thought. I made my bed, got dressed and went to the den where Mr. H. was engrossed in a crossword puzzle.
“Good morning!” I said. He grunted, not even looking up from his paper.
Feeling ignored, I clapped my hands together three times. Mr. H. looked up and said, “What was that for?”
“What do you think it was for?” I said.
“I dunno,” he said. “You either wanted me to come and do something for you or you’re glad you finished one of your chores.”
“Didn’t you ever hear the expression, ‘If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands’?
“Yeah.” he answered.
“Well?” I said. Then I waited. And waited.
“I guess that means you’re not happy today.”
Nothing.
“We have a lot of things to be happy for, you know,” I reminded him.
“Yeah.”
“Aren’t you happy that you’ve been married to me for about a hundred years? And that we can still look at each other and smile when we wake up each morning? And that your brain is still sharp enough to work all those crossword puzzles? And most of all, aren’t you happy that I still have the energy to bug you like this when you’d rather be left alone?”
Finally! Mr. H. looked up, gave me a big smile and said....

“Yes.”
And it was worth the wait!
